PART 2: THE BABY WHO SHATTERED EVERYTHING
The air in the hospital room thickened. Rain still pounded against the windows, but it sounded distant now—like the world had shrunk to just the three of us. Daniel’s face twisted, the kind of disbelief that’s almost frightening when paired with rage restrained by social pretense. Vanessa’s smile was gone. Her diamonds sparkled like icy daggers.
“You… you can’t do this,” Daniel said, his voice shaking. “That child… she’s mine! She has my blood!”
I laughed softly, rocking the newborn in my arms. “Daniel, she’s not yours. She has everything I can give her. And you? You taught me exactly how to survive without you.”
Vanessa stepped forward, as if she could somehow claw the truth from me. “Emily, don’t be ridiculous! You’re trying to humiliate us in front of the staff!”
I didn’t flinch. “I don’t need to humiliate you. You’ve been doing that to yourself for years.”
Daniel’s hands clenched into fists. “You can’t take this away from me. I… I have rights! The court—”
“Rights?” I cut him off, voice sharp as a scalpel. “You abandoned us, Daniel. You drained our accounts, lied about my health, ruined my life. And now you want to waltz into a hospital room and claim what you never cared about? You don’t get a single thing.”
Vanessa huffed, anger boiling over. “You’re insane. You’ll regret this.”
I smiled down at my daughter, her tiny fingers curling around mine. “No, Vanessa. The only regret here is yours. She will never know your cruelty. She will only know love.”
