Obesity is not an obvious problem. There are many causes and treatments. Some work for some, but not for others.

Now scientists know why.

A recent study published in the Journal of Public Health examined a group of 4,000 obese adults and divided them into six different groups.

#Number 1:   Healthy young women – these are women who were overweight, but generally had very few obesity-related complications such as type 2 diabetes.

#Number 2:   Heavy drinkers – as above, but with higher alcohol consumption.

#Number 3:  People in their fifties, sad and anxious – mostly women with mental health problems and dissatisfaction

#Number 4:  Older, wealthy, healthy people – generally good health characteristics, but high alcohol consumption and high blood pressure.

#Number 5:   Older people, physically ill, but happy – older people with multiple chronic diseases, such as osteoarthritis, but good mental health

#Number 6:   People with poorer health – those who are most economically disadvantaged and have the most chronic diseases.

This research is important because understanding the underlying causes of obesity can help those affected combat it. This is a significant step forward in the treatment of obesity, but further research is needed.

There are two types of body fat distribution: android and gynoid.

According to PositivMed:

“The so-called ‘android’ body fat distribution pattern is named so because more men than women exhibit this profile. It is also sometimes referred to as an ‘apple shape’ because the waist is wider than the hips.”

And…

“A gynoid body shape is most commonly observed in women. Many describe this body shape as pear-shaped. In this model, the hip circumference is larger than the waist circumference.”

We’ll do the math for you!

1. Upper body obesity (Android)

This usually means you’re eating too much and not getting enough exercise. Try cutting back on sweets and getting 30 minutes of exercise every day. If that doesn’t help, you should see a doctor or nutritionist.

2. Abdominal obesity (Android)

Excess weight in this area can be caused by stress, anxiety or depression. The best way to counteract this is with exercise and relaxation techniques. It is also a good idea to seek medical advice or therapeutic help.

3. Lower body obesity (gynoid shape)

This is a common problem for many women. Exercises that combine lower body strength training with cardio are important for reducing this fat deposit. This problem area can be difficult to treat. Don’t hesitate to seek help.

4. Bloated Stomach (Android)

Fat deposits in this area can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption and/or breathing problems. Try to reduce your alcohol consumption and focus on breathing exercises. Proper breathing engages the entire upper body.

5. Obesity in the lower body, extending to the lower legs (gynoid obesity)

This most often occurs in pregnant women. Your legs may swell. Try water aerobics to relieve the pressure on your leg and foot joints, and sit with your feet elevated.

6. Large, protruding belly with fat deposits on the upper back (Android)

This form of obesity is similar to type 1 obesity in that it is caused by a lack of exercise. Exercise is important, as is maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Eat frequent, small meals.

Knowing what to do with a specific weight problem is key to developing the best method for burning fat.
