Part 2: The Judge’s Discovery

Part 2: The Judge’s Discovery

The judge closed the file with a decisive snap.

“This court finds the plaintiffs’ claim to be not only entirely without merit, but borders on malicious prosecution,” the judge ruled, looking down at my parents with open disdain. “The will stands as written. Captain Vance retains full control of the $4.7 million inheritance. Furthermore, I am ordering the plaintiffs to cover all of the defendant’s legal fees and court costs.”

The gavel struck one final time. Case closed.

As the courtroom cleared, my parents stayed glued to their chairs, staring at the floor. Their attorney was already packing his briefcase, refusing to look at them.

I closed my folder, buttoned my suit jacket, and walked past their table. I didn’t feel anger anymore. I didn’t feel the need to gloat.

“Cassidy… please,” my father whispered, his voice cracking as he finally looked up at me, the arrogance completely gone from his eyes. “We didn’t know. We’re your parents. We’re family.”

I stopped at the courtroom doors and looked back at them one last time.

“No,” I said softly, the calm of a seasoned prosecutor in my voice. “You were just the people who raised me. My grandmother was my family. And her legacy stays with me.”

With that, I pushed the heavy oak doors open and walked out into the sunlight, leaving the ghosts of my past behind forever.
